The Kinyon Slides
Time travelling through a mountain of old slides that my grandma has kept in a cupboard for half a century.
Most of them were taken by my grandfather, Ellis Kinyon, who went by "Kinny" or maybe "Kenny" depending on who you ask.
He and his son David were both lost at sea in 1958, but the slides made it through the Vietnam war, disco, earthquakes,
blizzards, countless moves, the Regan administration, the dot-com bust, 9/11, and my mom's doctoral dissertation,
all the way to the invention of Tumblr. Here they live.

I’m absolutely in love with this photo. The expressions are brilliant. There’s just something about it - it looks like a fashion shoot for an edgy-but-retro brand, or maybe a scene from an alternate-history apocalypse. David has such a natural feel for the camera in almost all his photos - but in this one, even though he’s off to the side, only part way in the frame, his expression is penetrating. And that gaze my grandmother has could cut through steel.
I wonder what the photographer said before it was shot.
